5 Best Indian Food Spots When Travelling in Toronto

If you’re visiting Toronto soon, or you’re a local, and you’re looking for delicious Indian food spots, then you’ve come to the right place! I’ve been visiting these food spots countless times whenever I’m craving delicious Indian food, and I was surprised when I realized not many people know about them whenever I bring it up in conversations. Therefore, I have decided to write a blog post about it.

Below are 5 best Indian food spots that I highly recommend checking out in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.

1. Rick’s Good Eats

I won’t lie, Rick’s Good Eats is pretty damn good! The chef, Rick Matharu, won Canada’s prestigious “Recipe to Riches” competition and then decided to open up his own diner. The food is a fusion between Indian and Canadian, such as: Punjabi Cheeseburger Dip, Roti-Tacos, Tandoori Fried Chicken Bites, and more. Not many restaurants offer fusion food like this, so it’s definitely a unique food spot that you must try atleast once!

If you ever visit the place, I highly recommend getting the Loaded Masala Fries. I get it every time I go there with my friends. It’s fries topped with: cheese, red onion, tomato, jalapeno, achari mayo, chicken or paneer, and more. It’s super filling and delicious!

For dessert, I would recommend trying the rasgulla samosa. For those of you who don’t know what rasgulla is, it’s basically a ball made out of sugar and milk. It’s soft, spongy and often served in sugary milk. Talk about sugar overload! However, rasgullas and samosas don’t go together, which is why I had to try this item when I saw it on the menu. This item is so unique, the outside is a samosa, flavourful, crispy and salty on the outside, however on the inside it’s rasgulla, a burst of sugar goodness! It’s an interesting combination, and I would highly recommend you try it at least once.

2. Chaska Indian Street Food Obsession

This place offers exactly what the title states, Indian street food! The story behind Chaska is that Chaska means obsession. Naveen Seth is the founder and owner of Chaska and he created this diner based on his fond memories from his childhood roadtrips. He would visit different cities in India to meet his friends and family, and try different street foods such as: samosas, kathi rolls, chaat and more. He would also encounter vibrant Indian trucks on the way, which is how he got his decor inspiration from for his diner.

Chaska offers samosa sliders, kathi rolls, masala chai, channa bowls, pani puri, and more. If you plan on visiting this food spot, I would recommend getting samosa sliders and mango lassi. Samosa sliders is basically a burger with a samosa in it. It’s so flavourful due to all the sauces they add, and spices. It’s a burst of flavour with every bite! The mango lassi is a fresh mango shake, and it tastes so damn good with the samosa sliders! I highly recommend it!

3. Guru Lukshmi

If you like South Indian food, then you’ll love Guru Lukshmi! Guru Lukshmi was founded by Kumar and Thana, a husband and wife duo who craved South Indian food, but soon realized that Canada was deprived of it. As a result, they founded this restaurant in 2003 and their two daughters joined the business as well.

Guru Lukshmi is known for its dosas. For those of you who don’t know what a dosa is, it’s basically a savoury crepe made out of fermented rice and lentil batter, and it is found throughout South Asia dating back to thousands of years. In the past, dosas used to be thick and dense pancakes, however nowadays, they are very thin and crispy. Dosas can have cheese in them, potatoes, onions, clarified butter, and more.

Whenever I visit Guru Lukshmi, I often get the Cheese Dosa. It’s melted cheese in crepe and it tastes amazing when you dip it into coconut chutney. I highly recommend it! My parents would often get the Aloo Masala Dosa, which is filled with potatoes. It’s really filling and flavourful!

If you’re not a dosa person, yet you still like South Indian food, don’t worry, there are other items available at this restaurant. Guru Lukshmi offers idlis, which are small cakes made out of steamed rice and lentil, vadas, which are fried lentil flour donuts, samosas and more. The quality of their food is incredible!

4. Bombay Bakers

Number 4 is Bombay Bakers! Unfortunately, they don’t have an “About” page so I can’t provide you with a background story, however, I do know that they are a family-owned business. Bombay Bakers offers a variety of super affordable street food, such as: Paneer Panini for just $4.50, Cheese Dosa for $5.50, Pani Puri for $2.99, and more. Their prices are shockingly low, and the food is incredibly delicious!

If you ever visit Bombay Bakers, I would highly recommend getting the Paneer Tikka Panini, Cheese Dosa, Pav Bhaji, and Pani Puri. The best part about this place is you can try a variety of different street food items and still have the final total be less than $20. My family and friends always order a ton of items from here and then we sample each other’s food. I highly encourage you to try this place at least once!

5. Veggie Planet

Last but not least at number 5, it’s Veggie Planet! Veggie Planet was founded by Kavita, a woman who decided to leave her high-paying accounting job to follow her passion in opening a street food restaurant. She dreamt of this day since childhood and finally made it happen in 2017 with the support of her family.

Veggie Planet offers vegetarian and vegan Indo-Western fusion food, such as: Desi Masala Pizzas, Kichori Burgers, Planet Special Poutines, Basil Pesto Naanzas, Pani Puris, and more.

If you ever visit this restaurant, I highly recommend ordering the Schezwan Naanza. It’s similar to a pizza but it’s on naan bread. The toppings on it are absolutely delicious! Such as: onions, green peppers, red peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, coriander, topped with Schezwan sauce. I would also recommend getting the pav bhaji, which is a vegetable curry served with bread, onions, tomatoes and lemons. It’s so good!
